Michael Doret nos describe la portada del nuevo disco de KISS

Cuando Paul Stanley vino a mi estudio para conversar sobre el diseño para la portada del nuevo disco "Sonic Boom", no tenía idea con que me iba a encontrar. No había tenido contacto con el desde que hice el trabajo para Rock and Roll Over, y tampoco recordaba mucho de como había sido en aquel entonces. Toda la ansiedad se fue diluyendo en cuanto empezamos a conversar. Paul es un "caballero entre caballeros" e inmediatamente me sentí cómodo charlando con el—como si no hubiesen pasado los años. Luego de una corta charla el me explicó que era lo que estaba buscando para la nueva portada. Su visión para este album era hacerlo tan vital y crudo como lo hicieron en RARO. El sentía que ese fue uno de los mejores trabajos que hicieron, y querían recrear en el nuevo album esa energía tanto musical como visual. Si bien no quería que haga una copia de la portada de RaRO, me pidió de intentar capturar el mismo espíritu, actitud, energía, y estética que había puesto en aquella pieza. Otra de sus condiciones fue que a diferencia de RaRO (donde había creado versiones abstractas y gráficas de sus caracteres)fuesen representaciones fotográficas de los miembros con sus máscaras.

Cuando hice RaRO contaba con área de trabajo de 12". Ahora, con portadas para CD y librillos ese espacio de trabajo se ve reducido a menos de un 40% de la medida original.

Diseñar en un espacio de 4¾” te expone a diferentes problemas que enfrentar a diferencia de cuando diseñaba portadas para LPs. De hecho el diseño anterior no habría funcionado en la medida para CD, ya que tiene tantos elementos que habrían atestado el espacio tan pequeño. Así que lo elementos de Sonic Boom debían ser más grandes, gruesos—y pocos. Tomé la decisión de hacer que el título sea el pricipal foco de atención de la grafica, moviendo los otros elementos (caras, logo) a prominentes—pero subordinados—roles.

Así que comencé con lápiz y papel tratando de resolver del mismo modo que hago para resolver los problemas en cualquier diseño que realizo. No quise volverme loco pensando demasiado en cuanto se podría comparar el nuevo diseño a RaRO. Esa portada ha tomado vida propia y se ha convertido en un ícono cultural pop. El crear una portada icónica no pudo haber sido una de mis metas. Todo lo que era capáz de hacer era tratar de crear los gráficos más convincentemente posible dentro de los parámetros y limitaciones que se me pusieron. Así que comencé desde el núcleo del diseño creando lo que llamo "constelación de palabras" sobre el título. Busqué de que comunicara su significado visualmente no solo haciendolo angular y "explosivo", sinó también creando una forma que sugiriera vuelo—un ala. Teniendo presente el diseño simétrico onda mandala de RaRO comencé a diseñar la pieza nueva como un campo creciendo desde el centro del cuadro, y cubiertos con mi versión del omnipresente logo de KISS.

Me tomó una semana esbozar hasta encontrarle el punto en que me sentí seguro de lo que estaba haciendo. Tal como hice con RaRO, me sentí tan seguro con el diseño de esta portada que decidí no presentar otras opciones—quería que ESTA fuese.

La revista "Notas Sin Pentagrama" es la publicación informativa que distribuye la Asociación Argentina De Interpretes (AADI), de la cual soy socio.

En el Nº18 (Abril/Mayo 2009) está publicada la siguiente nota que paso a transcribir para compartir con Uds:

"LEY PARA LA PROMOCION MUSICAL EN LA CIUDAD DE BUENOS AIRES"

Como es de público conocimiento, luego de la tragedia de República de Cromañon, muchos espacios culturales sufrieron un notable decaimiento ante la imposibilidad de presentar números musicales en vivo.
A casi cuatro años y medio del luctuoso episodio, con la aprobación unánime de la Legislatura porteña, el Jueves 19 de Marzo nació la esperada ley que beneficia a los músicos y a los propietarios de locales que organizan recitales. Luego de su reglamentación, lo que se dio en llamar el "Régimen de Concertación para la Promoción de la Actividad Musical" servirá para "proteger y fomentar" las presentaciones en vivo.
Esto significa que, por un lado, se otorgarán estímulos para los artistas y por otro, subsidios, créditos y exenciones impositivas a los establecimientos que ofrecen conciertos y tienen una capacidad de hasta trescientos espectadores.
Serán contemplados los locales que presenten una propuesta de programación que cubra "un mínimo de nueve meses en el año, con al menos cuatro funciones en distintos días y horarios centrales".
Para los intérpretes y para quienes programan la actividad "en vivo", esta es una buena noticia que, desde nuestra entidad, tambien concelebramos.

Felicito a los músicos, a los dueños de locales, a los legisadores y a todos los que de una u otra forma son parte de los eventos en vivo, ya que han trabajado en favor de la cultura en la ciudad capital.
Deberíamos tomar esto como un ejemplo de cómo hacer las cosas "con buen criterio" en Santa Fe, donde aparentemente los altisimos niveles de ruidos que se generan con las carreras de autos en pleno centro de la ciudad son tolerables y la música es considerada "polución auditiva".

No a la resolución

Michael Doret, el diseñador de la portada del nuevo disco de KISS

Michael Doret, famoso diseñador y letrista, es quien fue contratado en 1976 por KISS para diseñar la portada de Rock and Roll Over y nuevamente será el encargado de hacerlo para el nuevo álbum de estudio.

Traduzco parte de una reciente entrevista en la cual habla de su trabajo con KISS.

La portada del album de KISS ha dejado una huella en mi de niño.

Aparentemente, dejó una huella en mucha gente.


Dijiste que la ilustración para esa portada vino de un trabajo realizado para una revista japonesa, IDEA. De dónde provino esa inspiración para la portada?


La revista estaba realizando una nota sobre mi trabajo y me pidieron hacer una portada para ese número. Quise que la portada pareciera una galería de tiro. Así que la inspiración viene de Coney Island, pero la inspiración más directa viene también de los antiguos soldaditos de plomo y juegos de puntería en litografías. De todos modos, la idea para la portada de la revista IDEA vino primero y luego la de Rock And Roll Over. Me encantó el modo en que como salió la portada de IDEA, de como fue impresa usando colores Pantone, parecía hecha en serigrafía. Realmente quería volver por esa ruta. Y ya que los miembros de KISS usaban ese maquillaje estilo Kabuki, esa aproximación al estilo japonés en esa portada de IDEA encajaba perfecto. Así que fui con esa gráfica y usé una paleta de colores y estilo similar. Incluso lo realizamos en 5 colores planos, no en proceso de 4 colores.

Entonces la portada fue como una galería de tiro?

No, para nada. Terminó siendo más como una Mandala, más influenciado por lo asiático. Yo solo tomé el estilo para esa portada. El tema visual sale del nombre del álbum, la idea de "giro". No existe "el lado correcto" de la portada. Algo para remarcar es que despues de todos estos años desde aquella portada, ellos vinieron a mi y me pidieron diseñar la portada de su próximo album. Es un gran proyecto, y estos momentos, estoy totalmente inmerso en el.

Si no nos quieren escuchar… subamos el volumen!

"Es lamentable la situación en la que se encuentra la comunidad de músicos en la ciudad de Santa Fe, gracias a las medidas tomadas por el Intendente.
Tal parece que la música "en vivo”, como expresión cultural y entretenimiento, molesta a algunas personas de esta ciudad.
El gobierno plantea que los dueños de los boliches muevan (no se sabe cuando, ni como) todos los bares, pubs y confiterías bailables a las afueras de la ciudad, sobre la ruta 168 (camino a S. J. del Rincón) y para presionar al utópico éxodo no tuvo mejor idea que prohibir, si PROHIBIR, la actuación de músicos en esos establecimientos, hasta tanto no se muden fuera de la ciudad.
Esta apresurada y nefasta resolución ha dejado a todos los músicos profesionales sin posibilidad de desarrollar nuestro trabajo en lugares donde habitualmente podíamos laburar.

No voy a explayarme sobre los riesgos que implicaría la concentración de gente yendo y viniendo de locales nocturnos en un lugar casi descampado, sin seguridad, rodeado de asentamientos, con escasas paradas de un par de líneas de colectivos y en una ruta donde los accidentes ocurren a plena luz del día. Ahora sumemos el factor alcohol, cansancio nocturno y el transito interprovincial (Santa Fe / Entre Ríos) que habitualmente se da en esa zona.

El Intendente y sus asesores deberían proponer que los lugares que ya funcionan dentro del radio urbano tengan tratamiento acústico necesario para que el nivel de la música (para algunos "ruidos molestos") que sale fuera de los locales esté dentro de los parámetros permitidos. Esto se realiza midiendo con un Decibelímetro cuanto volumen llega a los vecinos y no "a ojo"... bueh... en este caso sería "a oído".

Por otro lado, no sería muy difícil llegar a un acuerdo con respecto al horario de finalización de eventos musicales. Por ejemplo: Shows en días de semana hasta las 23hs y los fines de semana hasta la 01hs.

No es TAN difícil encontrarse a "mitad del puente", no?

Tampoco existe un programa que apoye a la realización de eventos en espacios municipales (Teatros, auditorios, anfiteatros, plazas, etc.).
Artistas provenientes de Buenos Aires ocupan casi todos los fines de semana el teatro. No sería mala idea destinar, al menos, UN fin de semana por mes para propuestas locales.

Se sabe que en otras ciudades del interior del país se da prioridad a los artistas locales antes que a los de afuera. Organizando eventos públicos y pagándoles las actuaciones con sumas coherentes. Aquí se destinan miles de pesos en artistas de renombre, que a la hora de presentarse en Santa Fe, traen una guitarra acústica barata y una computadora, desde donde "disparan" los sonidos de cientos de instrumentos que se escuchan en sus discos. Un robo.

Por último, querría hacer una lista de todas las personas que se ven afectadas con esta medida poco inteligente y rayana al autoritarismo.
- Músicos profesionales y sus familias.
- Dueños de establecimientos y sus familias.
- Personal en relación de dependencia dentro de los boliches: mozos/as, cocineros, seguridad, gastronomicos en gral. y sus familias.
- Empresas de sonido/luces para espectáculos y sus familias.
- Comerciantes con negocios dedicados a venta de Instrumentos musicales y afines y sus familias.
- Público en gral. que disfruta de eventos artísticos en vivo, que ahora se ven privados de poder acudir a los mismos.

Seguramente cada uno que lea esto pueda agregar a alguien más a esta lista.

Todos los arriba mencionados también somos ciudadanos y seguramente vamos a tener en cuenta lo realizado por esta gestión a la hora de emitir nuestro voto en futuras elecciones.

Colegas y amigos, todos y c/u somos parte de la comunidad. No dejemos que nos ignoren y vulneren nuestros derechos.
Otros, por distintos motivos , cortan rutas, calles y hacen manifestaciones con bombas y fuego en pleno centro de la ciudad para hacerse oír y lo logran.

Si no nos quieren escuchar… subamos el volumen!
